Animal abuse and family violence are usually perceived and treated as separate issues, that up until very recently, have been handled independently by animal control or human services agencies. Up to 48% of women in an abusive relationship delay leaving a dangerous situation out of concern for their pet’s safety. The Women’s Resource Center’s Pet Safe Haven program is a service to help victims of domestic violence place their companion animals out of harm’s way so that they can seek safety themselves.
October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month (DVAM), a month dedicated to raising awareness and providing information about intimate partner violence. This year the Pulaski Community Partners Coalition and the Women’s Resource Center of the New River Valley have partnered to bring awareness during October through this video and a series of other short videos.
