Okay, this is the FIFA World Cup 2026 explained in 60 seconds, so that you can sound smart at the next watch party.
First off, it's the biggest soccer World Cup in history—104 matches played in the USA, Mexico, and Canada. 48 teams are split into 12 groups with 4 teams each. In the groups, every team plays every other team once. A match can end in a draw during the group phase.
Then 32 teams advance to the knockout phase—the Round of 16: the 12 group winners, 12 second-placed teams, and 8 best third-placed teams.
Each team has 11 players on the field. A match lasts 90 minutes, split into two 45-minute halves.
You can't be closer to the opponent's goal than both the ball and the last defender when the ball is played to you—that's called offside.
If the ball goes over the goal line after a defender touches it, the attacking team gets a corner kick.
If a defending player fouls or touches the ball with their hand in the penalty area, the attacking team gets a penalty.
Up to 5 players can be changed during a match.
From the knockout round onwards, if there's no winner after 90 minutes, there's 30 minutes of extra time. If still no winner, penalty kicks decide it.
