INDIA'S DEFENCE EXPORTS :
Growth in Defence Exports:
Between 2019 and 2024, there is a growth of 800% in India's defence exports.
In 2024, India exported ₹35,000 crores worth of defence equipment to 85 countries across continents.
India is one of the top 25 defence exporters globally.
80% of the growth in defence exports is attributable to private industry which includes exports of missiles, rockets, torpedoes, artillery, guns, drones, etc.
Advantages of Defence Exports:
1. Increased forex earnings.
2. Reduced import dependency from 46% to 36.7% by December 2022.
3. Enhanced integration with global defence supply chains with countries like the USA and France.
4. Strategic independence is crucial amid escalating geopolitical tensions.It enhances India's strategic position and diplomatic relations.
5. Strengthens India's role as a key player in the Indo-Pacific region. It Enhances the role of Indian shipyards in servicing US and European naval forces.
Factors Contributing to Growth:
1. India's capabilities in software and AI fulfill modern defence requirements, Shift towards tech-driven capabilities attracting global defence OEMs.
2. Decline in Chinese arms exports due to quality and performance issues in countries like Myanmar, Nigeria, and Pakistan, creating opportunities for India.
Government Initiatives:
1. IDEX, Defence Production and Export Promotion Policy, Positive Indigenization List, and Defence Exports Steering Committee.
Streamlining export permissions and reducing delays using online systems.
2. General export license and 74% FDI in defence through automatic routes.
3. Defence line of credit
4. Aero India act as platforms for showcasing innovations.
5. Two industrial defence corridors in Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh aim to increase indigenization and exports.
Challenges in Defence Exports:
1. Bureaucratic resistance (DRDO) and outdated practices hinder private sector integration.
2. Delays and cost overruns in manufacturing.
3. Insufficient funding for research and development.
Israel spends 4.8% of GDP on research and development, whereas India spends just 0.65%.
Suggestions to increase defence exports :
1. Simplification of rules for govt to govt sales.
2. Integrating defence, education and startup sectors.
