When pruning eggplant lower foliage, focus on removing leaves within 6-8 inches of the soil to enhance air circulation and reduce fungal disease risk like verticillium wilt. Use clean bypass pruners to cut stems at the base where they meet the main stalk, avoiding damage to fruiting branches. Target yellowing, overcrowded, or insect-damaged leaves first, but never remove more than one-third of the plant's total leaves at once to prevent stress.
For indeterminate varieties, thin out weak side shoots emerging from the base to direct energy toward fruit production. Prune in the morning when the plant is turgid for faster wound healing, and disinfect tools between cuts if disease is suspected. Dispose of clipped leaves away from the garden to prevent pest habitats.
