I went out searching for high quality jaspers, agates, and cinnabar, and I was not disappointed! Rockhounding in washes can be very dangerous, always exercise extreme caution! This location is Sycamore creek in Arizona, between Payson and Phoenix.
Interestingly, cinnabar a mercury sulfide has historically been used as a pigment in many goods, as well as often used in Chinese medicine.
For the most part, the mercury, although highly toxic in it’s metallic form, is far less dangerous in this form, as the element is bound up within the cinnabar molecule. I would still advise caution when handling cinnabar, especially if you are hard rock mining it, as metallic mercury can be found within these deposits.
