STORYLINE:
The former chief judge who was replaced in the opening weeks of Saddam Hussein's Dujail trial amid claims he was too lenient told the Associated Press on Monday that the judge presiding over Saddam's Anfal trial should be "patient and calm in court".
Mohammed Oreibi Khalifa, the chief judge in the Anfal case, has already ejected Saddam Hussein and other defendants from the courtroom on more than one occasion.
"The judge should be patient and calm in the court and should respect the rights of all parties in the lawsuit and put into force the international criteria and should adhere to the criteria of just trial," Amin said from Irbil, in northern Iraq.
In the Anfal case, Saddam and six other defendants are charged with war crimes and crimes against humanity for a 1987-88 offensive against Iraq's Kurdish population.
Meanwhile, Amin refused to comment on the verdict in the Dujail case because the appeal process was still pending.
He said any comment would be "an interference in the tribunal's affairs".
The Iraqi High Tribunal on Sunday sentenced Saddam to hang for ordering the execution of nearly 150 Shiites from the city of Dujail following a 1982 attempt on his life.
Saddam's half brother and former intelligence chief Barzan Ibrahim, and Awad Hamed al-Bandar, head of the former Revolutionary Court, were also sentenced to death for their part in the Dujail killings.
The Dujail trial had a rocky start, with Saddam challenging Rizgar Mohammed Amin's authority in court.
Amin was replaced in January 2006 by Raouf Rasheed Abdel-Rahman after Shiite complaints that he was too lenient.
Asked whether the verdict would help stabilise the security situation in Iraq, Amin simply said: "Let us wait and see."
