Raufarhólshellir Lava Tunnel located in southeast Iceland which formed from a volcanic eruption about six miles away and is about about 5,000 years ago. Lava tunnels form when a river of lava flows, the top cools and solidifies. This keeps the lava underneath liquid. When the volcano stops erupting, the lava continues to flow out of the tunnel until it is empty. As the lava cools, the roof contracts and sections cave in creating satellites. There is black, red, and yellow lava rocks in the tunnel. The red lava rock forms when oxygen rich lava oxidizes and turns red. Black lava is basaltic lava that was not oxygenated. Yellow lava is caused by the presence of sulfur. Also in the cave are two lavafalls. These are like waterfalls but made of liquid lava instead of water.
