🌄🧀 Sutton, Quebec: Outdoor Adventures, Foodie Finds & Unique Stays | Quebec’s Eastern Townships Road Trip
🏙️ Welcome to Sutton – First Impressions & Local Flavours
In this episode, we arrive in Sutton, a charming town in Quebec’s Eastern Townships (Cantons de l’Est), for two days of outdoor adventures and delicious discoveries. With neither of us having visited before, we’re excited to dive into everything from unique accommodations to gourmet eats, all in partnership with Tourisme Québec and Merrell Canada.
🧺 Picnic Prep: Sampling Local Specialties at La Rumeur Affamée
Our adventure begins at La Rumeur Affamée, Sutton’s renowned gourmet food shop. We handpick a picnic lunch with artisan sandwiches, local cheeses, caramel spreads, baked goods, meats, beverages, and more. Sampling the cheeses is a highlight, and we can’t resist grabbing a locally famous maple pie for dessert!
🚲 Unique Adventure: Vélo Volant (Flying Bicycle) at Au Diable Vert
We drive out to Au Diable Vert, a nature and adventure hub where the star activity is Vélo Volant—one of only three “flying bicycle” circuits in the world. Pedalling suspended bikes through the forest canopy, over ponds, and along ravines is both peaceful and thrilling, with views stretching to Vermont’s Green Mountains. This one-of-a-kind experience lets us slow down and soak up the beauty of Quebec’s forests.
🥪 Forest Picnic & Maple Pie Indulgence
Back on the ground, it’s time for our picnic: turkey, cranberry, and brie sandwiches, local kombucha, turmeric chai, and desserts including the much-anticipated maple syrup pie—a sweet, quintessentially Canadian treat. Pro tip: Don’t leave Sutton without tasting this pie!
🐮 Highland Cows & Mountain Views
Next, we head out to see the iconic Highland cows (“hairy coos”) grazing in picturesque fields. The property’s trails lead us to “the rooster,” the best vantage point for soaking in both the pastoral scenery and the mountain backdrop.
🚶♀️ Hiking in Comfort: Testing Merrell Footwear
With new Merrell Moab FST 2 Waterproof hiking shoes, we hit the trails. The shoes offer excellent grip and comfort—perfect for exploring Sutton’s expansive nature trails and rolling green hills.
🛶 Kayaking Sutton’s Calm Waters
Time to get on the water! We opt for a calm, daytime kayaking excursion—no whitewater here—just tranquil paddling on a shallow, gentle river. We stay within the Canadian side (the U.S. border is just 5km downstream!), enjoying the peacefulness and stunning scenery.
🏡 Chalet Tour: Huttopia Sutton
After a busy day, we return to our cozy chalet at Huttopia Sutton. We share a tour of our A-frame retreat: private balcony, kitchen, big windows, comfy beds, and peaceful forest surroundings. With no in-cabin wifi, it’s the perfect place to disconnect, unwind, and enjoy the sounds of nature—both day and night.
🚶♂️ Exploring Sutton’s Walkable Downtown
In the afternoon, we stroll through Sutton’s walkable downtown. Cafes, boutiques, art galleries, and historic buildings line the main street, making for a pleasant and easygoing exploration.
🍻 Microbrewery Feast at À L’Abordage
Dinner is at À L’Abordage, Sutton’s beloved microbrewery. We sample eight local beers, dig into regional specialties like duck poutine (crispy fries, cheese curds, duck confit, and rich gravy) and a maple burger loaded with bacon, mushrooms, brie, and caramelized onions. The flavors are decadent and perfectly paired with craft beer—true Sutton foodie heaven!
🏁 That’s a Wrap on Sutton!
Two days in Sutton gave us a taste of adventure, unique eats, beautiful landscapes, and relaxing moments in nature. We hope you enjoyed exploring with us—stay tuned for the next episode as we continue our Quebec Eastern Townships road trip!
