Thank you, Mr. Fake Book for including this Stephen Foster song. It was one of my parents’ two favorite Foster songs — the other being "Beautiful Dreamer." Foster wrote “Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair” in 1854, and although it didn’t immediately become popular, it became so in the 1940s when ASCAP’s increased licensing fees led broadcasters to play only public-domain music on the air. A quote from a 1941 article in Time Magazine: “So often had “Jeanie With The Light Brown Hair" been played that she was widely reported to have turned grey.” The song is considered to be a “parlor song,” a category of music meant to be played and sung at home. The significance of this is that during the 19th century more families became able to afford musical instruments.
I’ve played this many times, and I used it in a choral arrangement of Stephen Foster Songs. The wonderful young people of the Ole Miss Concert Singers brought it to life, and gave it a beautiful life.
Anyway, Mom and Dad, this one’s for you.
