Edgar Allan Poe was an American writer, poet, and literary critic, best known for his dark and macabre tales that shaped the genres of horror and detective fiction. Born in 1809 in Boston, Poe faced a troubled early life, marked by the loss of his parents and financial struggles. Despite these hardships, he became a master of Gothic literature, producing iconic works such as The Tell-Tale Heart, The Fall of the House of Usher, and The Masque of the Red Death. His 1845 poem The Raven brought him widespread fame, showcasing his signature themes of grief, madness, and the supernatural.
Poe was also a pioneer of detective fiction, creating the character C. Auguste Dupin in The Murders in the Rue Morgue, influencing later writers like Arthur Conan Doyle. His life, marked by poverty, personal tragedies, and struggles with alcoholism, ended mysteriously in 1849 when he was found delirious in Baltimore and died shortly after. Despite his troubled existence, Poe’s influence on literature remains profound, inspiring generations of writers in horror, mystery, and psychological fiction.
