আয়তনের দিক থেকে বিশ্বের সপ্তম অবস্থানে রয়েছে ভারত। নিজ দেশের নাগরিক ছাড়াও দেশটিতে বসবাস করছে বিভিন্ন দেশের মানুষ। যদিও দেশটিতে জাতীয় শরণার্থী বিষয়ক কোন আইন নেই, তবে ১৯৫৯ সালের জওহরলাল নেহেরুর প্রদত্ত নীতিগুলি অনুসরণ করে তারা সর্বদা প্রতিবেশী দেশগুলি থেকে আসা শরণার্থীদের গ্রহণ করে থাকে। এবার পার্শ্ববর্তী তিন দেশের নাগরিকদের শরণার্থী হিসেবে ভারতে বসবাসের ক্ষেত্রে নতুন বিধিমালা জারি করেছে দেশটির স্বরাষ্ট্র মন্ত্রণালয়।
