In 1986, a heavily modified Westland Lynx (G-LYNX) tore across the Somerset Levels at 256 mph, setting a world helicopter speed record that still stands today. Stripped to the essentials, fitted with experimental BERP rotor blades, and flown solo from the starboard seat, this remarkable aircraft pushed rotary-wing performance to its absolute limit.
In this video, we explore the story behind the record attempt, the extreme engineering that made it possible, and how apprentices later restored the helicopter for public display. Nearly four decades on, G-LYNX remains the benchmark for helicopter speed.
