About the Panel Discussion
The last few years have seen transformational cooperation between the United States (US) and India in terms of technology. The most recent capstone is the US-India initiative on Critical and Emerging Technology, which aims to elevate and expand strategic partnerships across a gamut of technology issues like semiconductors, space, 5G and 6G telecommunication networks, and digital public goods between both governments, businesses, and scientific and academic institutions. Beyond the bilateral partnership, the US and India are also working with Japan and Australia through the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue’s working group on critical and emerging technology. Fundamentally, both countries seek to shape the way(s) in which technology is developed, designed, governed, and used globally, based on certain shared values and interests. Both the US and India are shedding longstanding inhibitions that thwarted close technological cooperation during the Cold War. Their incipient and budding technology partnership is crucial, given prevailing geopolitical and geoeconomic competition between major powers and how they can mutually assist each other confront and address strategic challenges.
This panel will focus on Indo-US technology relationship and partnership in the wake of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the US that resulted in critical announcements to advance bilateral technological cooperation. It will also cover the geopolitics of technological partnership, given major power tensions; its potential to help India advance domestic digital initiatives; and where potential irritants lie that could slow the current momentum.
