Pruning Pampas

Описание: How to prune ornamental grasses. I have so many varieties of ornamental grasses from pampas to dwarf fountain grasses. I like to take my time and prune them in phases. First up are the pampas.

The optimal time to prune ornamental grasses is late winter to early spring. I am in zone 8a and early spring is too late. The grasses will start sprouting new leaves in February. I already see a few new green leaves sprouting.

Pruning: You will need long pruning gloves to prevent cuts to your skin. The leaves are very sharp. Pruning shears and make sure they are sharp to ensure nice clean cuts. Bungee cords or something to tie back the old leaves. You will also need a tarp or wheel barrel and rake for clean up.

My pampas reach over 15 feet. I cut them back to 2-3 feet high. I will add compost and fertilizer in early spring to ensure strong and health plumes.
