From Oprahdaily.com : On the surface, Oprah’s latest Book Club pick, Long Island, is the story of betrayal and its aftermath; in the first few paragraphs we learn, alongside the main character, Eilis Lacey, that Eilis’s husband is having an affair, that the mistress is pregnant with his child, and that when the child is born, the mistress’s husband (of course she’s married, too) plans to leave the baby on Eilis’s doorstep.
But underneath this specific human drama, there is a much more universal story about, as Oprah puts it, “the struggle we all have to figure out where we truly belong.”
The book’s author, Colm Tóibín, knows this struggle intimately. Like Eilis, he is an Irish immigrant. Though titled Long Island, much of the book takes place in Tóibín’s own hometown of Enniscorthy, just south of Dublin. In the video above he reflects on his upbringing and the inspiration for this heart-stopping novel; the “idea of going away, staying away, missing home, coming back—all of that was sort of raw for me,” he admits.
