In this short documentary, Australian artist Yasmin Smith delves into the deep connections between plants, geology and human history in her exhibition Elemental Life at the Museum of Contemporary Art Australia. Using plant ash, coal ash and natural materials, Smith’s ceramics reveal how landscapes, rivers and extinction events shape the world we live in.

Blending art, science, ecology and deep time, Smith’s decade-long practice investigates the afterlife of forests, the chemistry of landscapes and the impact of the Anthropocene. Her work traces millions of years of environmental change, showing how extinction and renewal are embedded in the materials around us, and how the planet’s history is inseparable from our own.
