In this short clip from the Beth recording day, Gavin Payn blends multiple rudiments into a fluid, dynamic performance. Using the 5-stroke roll, 7-stroke roll, and single drag, he crafts phrases that move effortlessly around the kit—highlighting how rudiments can shape groove and expression in a musical context.
Crash cymbals and the kick drum are used strategically to accent key moments, giving weight and direction to each phrase. These accents help the rudiments breathe within the groove, adding energy and contrast without interrupting the flow.
The performance was recorded on a vintage Ludwig Super Classic kit, paired with Zildjian cymbals and a Keith Carlock Signature snare. The sound was engineered to capture both nuance and punch using ribbon and tube mics through high-end preamps.
