Disaster! NASA Artemis II New Launch Date will be Longer than what NASA said...
SpaceX fixed a second-stage engine issue and got Falcon 9 flying again in less than a week. Meanwhile, a core stage leak on NASA’s SLS, a problem that’s been around for decades — is now forcing at least a one-month delay.
NASA is currently considering pushing the Artemis 2 launch to March. But given the situation, that slip could easily stretch into the end of this year.
So when can we realistically expect Artemis 2 to fly? And will NASA delay the mission even further?
Let’s take a closer look in today’s episode of Alpha Tech.
Disaster! NASA Artemis II New Launch Date will be Longer than what NASA said...
SpaceX has just confirmed that Crew-12 has completed its final major milestone before launch, a full rehearsal ahead of Dragon’s trip to the International Space Station.
This is a notable update, because SpaceX moved incredibly fast. Just a little over a week ago, Falcon 9 launches were still grounded by the FAA following an upper-stage issue. And now, Crew-12 is already cleared and moving forward.
The new target launch time is no earlier than Friday, February 13, after a two-day delay caused by unfavorable weather.
Of course, weather delays are normal in spaceflight. And in this case, it’s just a one-day slip. Quite a contrast to Artemis 2, which is now facing at least a one-month delay.
Disaster! NASA Artemis II New Launch Date will be Longer than what NASA said...
This is a mission NASA has spent nearly four years preparing for. The first delay, due to cold weather, was understandable. But this time, the culprit is once again the infamous hydrogen leak, a problem that has plagued the program for decades.
Just recently, NASA posted on X, confirming that while the agency is still eyeing March as the next possible Artemis launch window, a firm launch date will only be set after a successful wet dress rehearsal and a full review of the data.
In other words, as of right now, Artemis 2 still does not have an official launch date. But we can make some educated estimates.
First, and this is a very important point, after the recent WDR issue, NASA is not rolling the rocket back to the VAB. And it aligns exactly with what many of us suspected last time.
