세월호 '천공작업'에도 배수량 기대 못미쳐…대책 논의
Continuing on with the ongoing salvage operation of Sewol-ho ferry, 15 holes have been drilled on the left side of the D Deck to drain the water out. But the investigating team says a problem was found during the drainage process. Cho Sung Min reports.
The salvaging process of the Sewol-ho ferry is encountering major obstacles before the vessel is safely brought onto dry land.
According to a member of the Sewol Investigating Team committee on Monday, the ferry needs to be drained out of water trapped inside to make its transportation feasible. The Sewol-ho is set to be placed on a module transporter that can carry up to 13-thousand tons, while the ferry is estimated to exceed that capacity by some 4-hundred tons. In order to drain the excess water, a total of twenty-one holes is to be bored on the left side of the ferry's D Deck, which is the side that is less damaged.
But after boring 15 holes, the official said a problem has emerged.
Each hole has a diameter of sixty to seventy millimeters, which is an adequate size for pumping water out...but it's been reported only a few holes work as intended, while most of the holes are releasing mud instead of water, eventually slowing down the process.
The investigation committee said it looks to remove at least 6-hundred tons of water from the vessel before transporting it to dry land, just to make sure the process is safe.
The transporting of the ferry to the land is expected to be concluded by Thursday to meet the neap tide period, but under the current circumstances, there are rising concerns that plans won't unfold as predicted.
