Bangladeshis are casting their ballots in one of the country’s most consequential parliamentary elections in decades — the first national vote since the 2024 student-led uprising that ended Sheikh Hasina’s 15-year rule.
Long queues were seen at polling booths as voters voiced hopes for a free, fair, and peaceful election, along with timely declaration of results.
The contest is largely viewed as a two-way race between the Bangladesh Nationalist Party and an 11-party alliance led by Jamaat-e-Islami.
Bangladesh’s Jatiya Sangsad has 350 seats, including 300 directly elected members and 50 reserved seats for women. Voting is being held in 299 constituencies, with polling in one seat postponed following the death of a candidate.
