8 fact-based tips for adults who choose to use cannabis.
1. "Start low, go slow." Today's marijuana plants have been bred to contain much higher levels of THC (the intoxicating ingredient) than in nature. Using cannabis in a concentrated form, like a dab, wax or shatter, removes the plant matter and may be 96% pure THC. Recommendations are to take between 1mg and 2.5mg of THC, especially if you're a new user.
2. Read the label! Be sure you know how much THC is in the product you're using and how much is considered a single serving. It's easy to overconsume if you eat a bag of gummies!
3. Be careful with edibles. You may not feel the effect for 1.5-2 hours, and by then you may have eaten too much. Wait to see how it's affecting you.
4. Make your purchases from a licensed seller. Licensed cannabis retailers are only selling products that are tested for quality, purity, issues like mold... and accurately labeled. Products on the street could be laced with other substances.
5. Pregnant or breastfeeding? Avoid THC! It can affect your baby's development.
6. Keep THC products locked up and away from kids and pets! Hospital emergency departments, poison control centers, and veterinarians are getting lots of calls about children and animals that have been poisoned by cannabis. It's not safe!
7. Talk to your kids about cannabis and other drugs. Early drug use causes permanent harm to the developing brain, is associated with mental health problems, and greatly increases the risk of addiction.
8. Stay off the roads for at least 6 hours after smoking THC (up to 35mg) and for 8 hours after eating THC (up to 18mg). Wait even longer if you use THC together with alcohol. Impaired driving is never safe!
