Our tour of the multiplayer modes available online takes us next to Party Mode. The twist here is that items appear on your playfields, whose presence depends on if you're playing Puyo Puyo or Tetris. If you're playing Puyo Puyo, items function like Nuisance Puyo and are used wheneer you clear Puyos next to them, and in Tetris, they take the form of an O-block and are used if you clear a line they occupy. There will always be one item on the playfield: Once you activate an item, the next one will appear.
If your playfield fills up, you just start over, and this goes on for as long as time remains. All of the other players receive points. Whoever has the highest score at the end of the round is the winner. I don't know how balanced the score scaling is between Puyo Puyo and Tetris though, but I do notice lower scores all around for Puyo Puyo. I'm guessing the gap closes at very high skill levels.
Characters get different frequencies of items, and it's typically based on their personalities. Jay and Elle are mischief makers, for instance, so they have a highly offensive item set. Zed, on the other hand, was built to heal and repair, so he has a mostly defensive item set. The game doesn't actually say what's what though. But yes, here's another mode where your character DOES have a beaing on how you do.
Party Modes are always 1 round long, so they are over with quick.
Match #3: Party
I AM PLAYER 1 (Arle & Carbuncle, Tetris)
Opponents
Player 2: DJOneUp (Jay & Elle, Puyo Puyo)
Rounds to Win: 1
Teams: None
I get my first Screen Clear here, and it's where I discover it's worth 50 credits. (I'm not entirely sure when it happened though.) Since this is my first Party Mode match, I was quite confused as to what was going on, but looking at the items' appearances now, when I'm not busy trying not to lose, they do make sense. The Searchlight one is pretty potent, if you ask me, due to how it obscures your playfield.
Match #4: Party
I AM PLAYER 1 (Ess, Puyo)
Opponents
Player 2: Crocodile (Amitie, Tetris)
Player 3: Amanda (Sig, Tetris)
Player 4: Rob (Zed, Tetris)
Rounds to Win: 1
Teams: None
I don't know what witchcraft I did, but I was the only one to pick Puyo in this group and managed to keep up with them. Maybe it's because Drop Speed Up causes more trouble in Tetris than it doesn Puyo Puyo.
Match #5: Party
I AM PLAYER 3 (O, Puyo)
Opponents
Player 1: Shiny (Risukuma, Tetris)
Player 2: YoKo (Sig, Tetris)
Player 4: Rob (Amitie & Carbuncle, Tetris)
Rounds to Win: 1
Teams: Me & Rob vs. Shiny and YoKo
Lastly, here's a team match. I played Shiny and YoKo in some other matches, and it seems they tend to pair themselves up as part of the same team. To counter that offer, I join the team with Rob to make it an even 2 vs. 2. I don't know how the winner is calculated in Party Mode, though. Do they add up the sums on each team?
