Tre War Venydh - “The village on a mountain”

I’ve always been a bit of a history nut, and love the deep history and unique culture of my home county of Cornwall (Kernow), on the far south western peninsula of Britain.

One of the Celtic Nations and a part of the UK that has always resisted being merely ‘part of England’, it’s been fiercely independent and culturally unique for centuries. Unlike much of England, the people of Cornwall retain ancient Briton ancestry and it’s known for legendary kings and queens, giants, sea monsters, mermaids, wizards and witches, pirates and smugglers. So many stories passed down through the generations. You name it, it has it. I do love a bit of lore!

Tintagel is a small village and rocky outcrop on the north coast, steeped in history, myth, legend and lore. The remote and (almost) cut off headland has archeological evidence of inhabitation going back to the 3rd and 4th centuries, and legend has it, it’s the birthplace of legendary King Arthur.

Its really not hard to see why George RR Martin was so heavily inspired by the medieval history and culture of these islands when creating his Game of Thrones world 🇬🇧⚔️👑

So on a recent trip to the ruins of Tintagel Castle, I decided to bring some kit with me and then put together this little piece about the place, featuring excerpts from old archive films to give us a bit of then and now.

Shot entirely on the LUMIX S1II and one lens - vintage Helios 44M. To create that filmic/period look and feel, I decided to shoot entirely in open gate and go for the classic 4:3 look, with a heavy film emulation. A slightly different approach to the one I usually take, which was fun for a change.
