SAINT BERNARD, Ohio (WKRC) - In Saint Bernard, some of the worst flooding was on Greenlee Avenue.
Things looked pretty good on Greenlee until people started looking a little closer. Several cars and dozens of homes were swamped by a flash flood like they'd never seen before. The pictures from Sunday night, August 28, were frightening. The pictures Monday were heartbreaking.
Toni Sabelhaus and her dog Bailey were high and dry Monday but during Sunday night's storm Bailey got scared. So they went to the basement until the water rushing down Greenlee Avenue and came inside their home. Sabelhaus has owned the home for more than 40 years and has never seen it flood. Sunday night she took in four feet of water. She lost her car, two furnaces and tons of belongings. She was not sure what was next.
The video from Sunday night was like a horror movie. Flooded cars, a river flowing through a cemetery gate to the street into people like Erica Forrester's homes like a thief. The wall behind Greenlee Garage was a waterfall. Monday it was rubble.
The police chief stopped by to check on them Monday. He grew up in St. Bernard and was still mystified by the storm.
Monday, still in shock, the folks on Greenlee started to clean up the mess. Grateful to be alive but puzzled by what nature delivered and how they'll get back to normal.
Chief Moeller said one of his neighbor's rain gauge caught more than 5 inches of rain in a three hour period. It had been a strange summer for the entire Tri-State. But what happened Sunday night in St. Bernard and Norwood was truly hard to believe.
Saint Bernard- Elmwood Place Junior and Senior High School were closed but the elementary schools will be open Tuesday, August 30.
Roger Bacon High School will also be closed again Tuesday, August 30.
