In 1994, Navy Lt. Shannon Workman became the first woman to qualify and serve as part of a combat squadron aboard an aircraft carrier. Women have continued serving in combat in the U.S. military ever since, although recently, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has ordered that the Pentagon conduct a review of women in ground combat roles.
