Walking is supposed to be automatic. For people with Hereditary Spastic Paraplegia (HSP), it often is not.
In this video, i-DASH explores how walking is normally shared across spinal systems, and what changes in HSP when one key system loses inhibition. Rather than focusing on muscles or strength, this video looks at walking through a nervous-system and spinal-control lens.
You will learn:
How walking unfolds across five phases, from intention to termination
The six major descending spinal systems involved in walking
Why rhythm and steady walking are often harder than starting
How elevated tone, reflex noise, and fatigue interfere with automatic walking
Why balance problems are often a second-order effect, not a primary deficit
How understanding these systems opens the door to better, more personalized strategies
This video is based on lived experience with HSP and systems-level reasoning. It is intended for education and understanding, not medical advice.
