A simple headstone marked “Mother.”
Another stone beside it that reads “Daughter.”
But the daughter isn’t actually buried there.
While cleaning the gravestones of Stella G. Robb (1881–1954) and Mildred Harriet Robb Baker (1911–1999) in North Watertown Cemetery in Watertown, New York, we uncovered a powerful family story that stretches across multiple counties and generations.
Stella Robb was widowed in 1915 after the tragic death of her husband Byron Robb in a wagon accident, leaving her to raise five children on her own. Through hardship, work, and determination, she held her family together during the early decades of the 20th century.
One of those children was her daughter Mildred.
Mildred remained close to her mother throughout her life and helped care for Stella during her final illness in the 1950s. Although Mildred later married Earl Baker and was ultimately buried with him in Macedon Center Cemetery in Wayne County, a memorial stone with her name was placed beside Stella in the Robb family lot at North Watertown Cemetery.
In this video, we carefully clean and restore these historic gravestones while sharing the history behind the Robb family and the remarkable bond between a mother and the daughter who stood beside her through life’s hardest moments.
Cemeteries hold more than names and dates. They preserve stories of resilience, sacrifice, and family connections that continue long after the people themselves are gone.
Join us as we bring these stories back to life one stone at a time.
Until the next stone, thanks for watching.
