Gwangdeoksa temple sits in the southeast of Gwangdeoksan Mountain, which borders Asan-si and Cheonan-si, and the southwest of Taehwasan Mountain.

Gwangdeoksa Temple is said to be established in 637 by Monk Jajang Yulsa during the Silla Kingdom. The Temple was refurbished during the reign of King Heungdeok (832).

Gwangdeoksa Temple was the biggest Buddhist temple in the Gyeonggi and Chungcheong regions. But it was burned down during the Japanese Invasion(imjin war) of Korea in 1592. The Daeungjeon and Cheonbuljeon halls were erected after the fire.
