These pipes are subjected to different types of stresses due to the weight of the fluid inside them and the pressure exerted by the fluid. Two of the most significant stresses in vertical pipes are hoop stress and axial stress.
Hoop stress is the stress that occurs circumferentially around the pipe wall. It is caused by the pressure exerted by the fluid inside the pipe, which tends to stretch the pipe material. Hoop stress is directly proportional to the pressure inside the pipe and the diameter of the pipe. As the pressure inside the pipe increases, the hoop stress also increases. Similarly, if the diameter of the pipe is larger, the hoop stress will be higher.
Axial stress, on the other hand, is the stress that occurs along the length of the pipe. It is caused by the weight of the fluid inside the pipe and any external loads applied to the pipe. Axial stress is directly proportional to the weight of the fluid and any external loads, as well as the length of the pipe. As the weight of the fluid or external loads increase, the axial stress also increases. Similarly, if the length of the pipe is longer, the axial stress will be higher.
It is important to understand and calculate hoop stress and axial stress in vertical pipes to ensure that the pipes can withstand the pressure and weight exerted on them without failure.
