Our Senior Literature Specialist, Sammy Jay, provides a preview of this incredible find: Antoine de Saint-Exupéry’s own retained typescript of his novel The Little Prince, with numerous hand-written annotations by the author.
As the sole typescript of “Le Petit Prince” available commercially, and one of just three known copies, this one stands out with a handwritten annotation on page 57 – believed to be the first written appearance of the book’s iconic quote: “On ne voit bien qu’avec le cœur. L’essentiel est invisible pour les yeux”. (“It is only with the heart that one can see rightly; the essential is invisible to the eye”.) It also includes the addition of the comet's name, a removal of references to Manhattan, and a cashed cheque used by Saint-Exupéry to purchase an approximation of a French air force uniform.
