Tonkotsu Heaven at Ramen Hiiki - the best iekei of Tokyo?

Iekei ramen is originally from Yokohama and has spread all over Kanagawa prefecture and beyond. While most iekei ramen shops have at least some connections to the original inventor shop “Yoshimuraya” in Yokohama, Ramen Hiiki is special as they are completely independent and run by someone who was just a big iekei fan who decided to open his own ramen shop. Open since 2018, Ramen Hiiki has won loads of awards for their ramen and is considered by many to be the best iekei ramen of Tokyo, maybe even the best tonkotsu ramen in Tokyo in general.

After having the bowl myself, it’s easy to see why some people would make that argument.

The tonkotsu base soup is fragrant, some would say funky or stinky, with both pork and chicken aroma filling your nostrils. Creamy and oily, but definitely more refined than at other iekei shops. The soup is honestly addicting from the first slurp and it’s hard to transition away from just taking scoop after scoop. The noodles are relatively short and medium thickness. They have a slight wave to them with a good bite and chewiness. When you order the “tokusei” (特性) special ramen, you will get two types of chashu added: two slices of pork loin and two slices of pork belly. They are only mildly seasoned, which fits well to the heavy soup. The ajitama egg is done to perfection, not something you see all the time at iekei ramen shops. If you go, make sure you are hungry and get a side of rice as well, you won’t regret it. The way to eat the rice is to soak some nori and then eat it with the rice, scoop rice into the soup or just dump the rice into the leftover soup at the end, ochazuke style.

Ramen Hiiki is 3 minutes of walking from Kamata station and therefore quite easy to access from anywhere in Tokyo. You have to expect at least some waiting time, as Hiiki is quite popular. Around Kamata, you will find some more really good ramen shops like Miyamoto, plus lots of other good restaurants, bars and izakayas.

I can wholeheartedly recommend a visit to Hiiki and I think it should be one of the 5 “must eat” ramen spots for everyone visiting Tokyo.
