Ronak Jain, together with her co-author Samuel Stemper, studies how mobile internet affects students’ learning and well-being. In her presentation, she showed that data from over 2.5 million students across 82 countries indicate that increased 3G access and smartphone use raises online time outside school while academic performance and sense of belonging decline. Jain emphasizes the importance of structured screen time, digital literacy education, and offline social engagement to mitigate these negative effects.
Ronak Jain is an Assistant Professor in Economics of Development and Child Welfare supported by UNICEF Switzerland, at the University of Zurich. Her presentation was part of the Department of Economics’ Annual Research Night, supported by the Excellence Foundation Zurich.
