Welcome back to Anatomy Breakdown – Muscle by Muscle with Treadwell, DPT.
Today we’re covering one of the most debated and misunderstood muscles in the posterior leg — the Plantaris.
Small muscle. Long tendon. Minimal force production.
But clinically? Extremely interesting.
In this video we break down:
• Plantaris origin and insertion
• True function (beyond plantarflexion)
• Muscle spindle density & proprioceptive role
• Why it’s absent in up to 20% of the population
• Tendon graft harvesting and strength implications
• “Tennis leg” and medial gastrocnemius strains
• Plantaris involvement in mid-portion Achilles tendinopathy
• Sensorimotor integration in gait and deceleration
Plantaris may not generate meaningful torque — but its anatomical location, variation, and interaction with the Achilles tendon make it clinically relevant in specific cases.
Not power. Control.
This is part of the posterior leg mini-series.
Next up: Gastrocnemius and Soleus — the big boys, the heavy hitters.
