Hello everyone and how do you do? How’s 2025 going for you all?
In this video, I describe the actions needed to manage a fire on the main deck cargo hold on the Boeing 747-8. Unlike the lower Forward and lower Aft cargo hold, which have their own Fire suppression systems- as in Fire extinguishing capability, the main deck does not. The strategy used on the main deck is to deplete the cabin of available oxygen as much as possible. We raise the cabin altitude to 25,000 feet, essentially depressurising the cabin and starving it of oxygen. The pilots protect themselves of reduced oxygen by donning the oxygen masks as shown in the video.
The aim always with Fires on board is to get the aircraft on the ground as soon as possible and get out!
If there is no availability of airports and the Fire/Smoke situation becomes uncontained or the greatest threat, then if over water, we would ditch in the sea too.
