Have you ever heard of the Museo e Cripta dei Cappuccini?
One of the most hidden and powerful gems of the Eternal City of Rome.
Beneath the church of Santa Maria della Concezione dei Cappuccini (built in 1626 at the request of Cardinal Antonio Barberini, brother of Pope Urban VIII) lies a crypt unlike any other.
Here rest the bones of over 4,000 Capuchin friars - not buried, but artistically arranged into chapels of skulls.
At the heart of it stand three fully dressed skeletons, with unforgettable message -
“What you are now, we once were.
What we are now, you shall be.”
The Capuchins believed that reflecting on death does not darken life -
it makes us live it more humbly, more consciously, more faithfully.
