🌴 Santa Maria Island — The Hidden Gem of the Azores 🌊

Nestled in the Atlantic Ocean, Santa Maria is the oldest and southernmost island of the Azores archipelago. Formed around 8 million years ago, it’s often called the “Sun Island” — known for its dry climate, golden beaches, and warm, inviting waters.

🏝️ Unlike the other volcanic islands of the Azores, Santa Maria’s landscape is softer and more Mediterranean — rolling green hills, red clay deserts, and white-sand coves like Praia Formosa. Its highest point, Pico Alto, rises 587 meters above sea level, offering breathtaking views over this 97 km² paradise.

👣 With a population of just over 5,000 people, the island has a peaceful rhythm. Villages like Anjos, Vila do Porto, and Santo Espírito preserve centuries of Azorean tradition. It was the first island discovered and settled by the Portuguese in the 15th century, and even hosted Christopher Columbus on his return from the Americas.
