In her early 30s, Alicia Alley of Sacramento put her life in the hands of a man halfway across the world whom she had never met … and he delivered. The man was a bone marrow match for Alicia, who suffered from a rare blood disease only curable through a transplant. “This man saved my life with his marrow donation, and he didn’t have to,” Alicia says. “... He is my absolute hero!” On Saturday, six years after her life-saving bone marrow transplant at Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento, Alicia met her hero for the first time. Holger Spengler is traveled from Hochwang, Germany, to meet the woman whose life he saved.
Their meeting happened during the 25th anniversary celebration of the Sutter Medical Center, Sacramento’s Blood and Marrow Transplant Program, which held a BMT Survivor Picnic at Discovery Park in Sacramento on Sept. 29, 2018. In the story, Dr. Michael Carroll, the medical director of the Sutter BMT Program, discusses the need for others to "Be the Match" ... and be someone's hero.
