The Zebra Collective is a cross-border artistic collaboration between Dr. Michael Gould, a music professor and visual artist at the University of Michigan, and Masimba Hwati, an interdisciplinary artist and researcher. Though based in different countries, they create together through a shared digital space - producing work that is deeply rooted in place yet globally resonant.
At the heart of their work is climate justice.
Through music, sculpture, and technology, they not only raise awareness but invite collective participation emphasizing that climate change affects us all, and creativity can be a powerful tool for transformation.
Formed in 2022 during a residency in Berlin, the duo launched the Nyami Nyami Project in partnership with Tanz Tangente, a dance school and gallery. This installation and performance series examines how climate change and human activity have affected the landscape of the Tonga people living along the Zambezi River, placing their experience within the larger context of both human societies and the surrounding ecosystems.
Central to the work is the river deity Nyami Nyami, symbolizing nature’s resistance to human influence and the enduring spirit of the river itself.
Over time, the project has evolved across Zimbabwe, South Africa, and shaped by local voices, instruments, and landscapes, the sound is layered, intentional, and alive with cultural memory.
