We kicked off our long weekend with boots on, packs light, and 22 adventurous souls ready to take on one of California’s gorgeous landscapes. The High Peaks & Condor Gulch Loop Trail delivers everything desirable in a day hike: 6.2 miles of adventure, 1,864 feet of elevation gain, and nonstop scenery that feels almost otherworldly. This route cuts straight through the heart of the park’s iconic rock spires, with the legendary “Steep and Narrow” section living up to its name - ladders, carved stone steps, tight squeezes, and airy ledges that reward us with jaw-dropping views at every turn.
Into the Caves: Bear Gulch
We began our journey through the talus passageways of Bear Gulch Cave, where sunlight filtered through cracks in the rock ceiling, illuminating mossy walls and echoing water droplets. Hidden inside, we counted at least three small waterfalls cascading through the cave. Emerging from the cool darkness, we made our way to Bear Gulch Reservoir, a serene oasis tucked among towering rock formations. It was the perfect lunch stop - peaceful, picturesque, and a welcome pause before the climb ahead.
The Climb Through the High Peaks
As we ascended into the High Peaks, the landscape transformed into a maze of volcanic spires and narrow ridgelines. This is where the trail becomes pure adventure. Steel handrails, ladders bolted into rock faces, and tight passageways keep us fully engaged. It’s thrilling without being technical - just enough exposure to make our heart race. From the summit, the rolling hills of central California stretch endlessly in every direction. On a clear day, the views feel infinite.
A Rare Encounter: The California Condor
The true highlight came at the top. We were lucky - incredibly lucky - to witness an endangered California condor soaring overhead. With an astonishing 10-foot wingspan, it’s one of the rarest birds in North America, brought back from the brink of extinction in the 1980s. Larger than bald eagles, these majestic birds are unmistakable in flight, with bold white triangular patches along the leading edges of their wings. Seeing many glide effortlessly above the dramatic rock formations was humbling. A reminder that wild places like Pinnacles aren’t just beautiful - they’re vital.
