How Surface Defense Works Against Other Surface Vessels | Cold Waters Tactics w/ DotMod

Описание: One of the features of DotMod is the ability to play as surface ships, not just submarines. In this custom mission, we set up a couple different NATO ships against a couple different Soviet ships to demonstrate what happens when you don't defend, vs. when you do defend, and how.

As a surface ship, you should turn on your radar, ESM, and scope almost immediately, unless you are trying to hide from an enemy. Your surface-to-air missile (SAM) needs radar to guide, as does your cannon.

Scenario 1) Oliver Hazard Perry-class FFG vs 3 Soviet DDGs

We've classified by sonar and ESM that we're facing a Kashin, a Kanin, and a Sovremenny. We did NOT turn on our radar as it would have pinpointed us, even though we need radar on to guide missiles to intercept. We pointed our tail toward enemy vessels to expose the CIWS.

As a demonstration, we did not launch a defensive missile. We were sunk by the 2nd shot that got through.

Scenario 2) Arleigh Burke-class DDG vs 3 x Soviet DDG

As chance would have it we ended up facing 3 x Kanin, which do not have antiship missiles. We used multiple RIM-156 Standard SM-2ER in anti-ship mode to sink all 3 without touching the neutral vessels. We also demonstrated chaff.

Scenario 3) Arleigh Burke-class DDG vs 2 x Contemporary Soviet DDG (Sovremenny or Udaloy)

We got 2 x Sovremennys. We turn on everything and left air defense on AUTO for AEGIS to take over automatically, as it launched one missile per incoming anti-ship missile. All were intercepted. We did have to use the CIWS and chaff as there were a few leakers, but none of the anti-ship missiles hit the ship.

We then returned fire with SM-2ER (anti-ship mode) in salvos of 3 or 4 each time and observed how Soviet ships responded with air defense missiles and CIWS as well, but we were successful in sinking both Sovremennys.

And that concludes our demonstration on how to use chaff and missiles to defend against incoming anti-ship missiles from hostile surface ships.
