Ghadir Khumm is a significant event in Islamic history that holds immense importance, particularly within the Shia branch of Islam. It took place on the 18th of Dhu al-Hijjah, in the year 10 AH (10th day of the Islamic month Dhu al-Hijjah, approximately March 16, 632 CE), during the Prophet Muhammad's farewell pilgrimage (Hajjat al-Wida).

During this event, after completing his last pilgrimage, Prophet Muhammad received a divine revelation at a place called Ghadir Khumm, located near Mecca. In this revelation, he received the following verse (Quran 5:67):

"O Messenger, announce that which has been revealed to you from your Lord, and if you do not, then you have not conveyed His message. And Allah will protect you from the people. Indeed, Allah does not guide the disbelieving people."

Following the revelation, the Prophet made a sermon in which he emphasized the importance of a specific individual as his successor and leader of the Muslim community. He took the hand of Ali ibn Abi Talib, his cousin and son-in-law, and declared, "Whomever I am his master, Ali is his master."

This declaration is fundamental in Shia Islam, signifying the designation of Ali as the rightful leader (Imam) after Prophet Muhammad. It signifies the divine appointment of Ali to carry forth the message of Islam and lead the Muslim community after the Prophet's passing. The event of Ghadir Khumm is viewed as a clear indication of the divine will and the establishment of the leadership lineage within the Shia tradition. It is celebrated annually by Shia Muslims as Eid al-Ghadir.
