PROBLEM
One of the most difficult processes to deal with in all aspects of life is that of change. Change can come crashing into your life without warning, like the unannounced party guest who kicks the door in and steals all the beer. It seems that change is right at the top of many people’s lists of things they don’t like. It can be terrifying, emotional, exciting, exhilarating, but it’s always on the horizon and can be on you before you know it.
That’s certainly true of working at my firm, and also today’s complicated lifestyles. Change is everywhere.
Over the last few years I’ve tried to get better at understanding, dealing with and getting the most from changing situations. I’ve summarised some of the tips that have helped me.
Accept it & see the good
The most important of all. Acknowledge that change is happening, with or without you. Acceptance allows you to commit (or not) to the inevitable, and to facilitate building your mindset to get the most from the transition.
I've heard change describes as being “about movement and moving forward to a better place. You can get onboard or be rolled over. Either way it’s going to happen.” So set that mindset at the start. It’s happening. Once you’ve truly accepted that fact you can prepare to get the most benefit from it and avoid being crushed.
Don’t be scared
Change often comes in the shape of a dark shadow, lacking detail and clarity. It’s important to realise that change is usually good. It’s taken us from living in caves to Netflix. It might help to plan out how you’re going to deal with an upcoming change.
Write down a plan and let it guide you through the maze. Or as David Bowie wrote – “turn and face the strain”.
Realise it’s going to be work
Navigating the often choppy change waters isn’t going to be easy. But there are things you can do to make it easier. Personally I find it useful to continuously train myself to understand and deal with change. Just like an athlete prepares for a big event, it helps us if we train our minds (and bodies) to be able to process and embrace a change. There are lots of resources available to help.
Do it fast
Change can happen super-fast and also in multiple areas. Don’t sit around and wait. Being on the ball from the start can mean the difference between success and a less favourable outcome.
Collaborate
The chances are there will be others in your space that are undergoing a similar change, be it personal or professional. It’s useful to find solace in the company of similarly impacted others. This can also be where great ideas are born to help with the process of a particular change.
Practice! Get used to the feeling of discomfort
The more we can get used to the process of change, the more comfortable we become. To the point that the challenge becomes much simpler to deal with. If you’re feeling brave then why not initiate some change, either a physical challenge, or sign up to present at a conference, or anything to push yourself out of that comfort zone. Practice builds resilience and lowers stress.
