For 20+ years, Maureen lived with light chain (AL) amyloidosis, a rare and relentless blood disease. Then came a scientific breakthrough years in the making.
Maureen enrolled in a CAR T cell clinical trial, led by Dr. Heather Landau, a bone marrow transplant specialist at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center (MSK).
The trial was powered by a remarkable feat of scientific engineering developed in the lab called CAR T therapy. It removes a patient’s immune cells, re-programs them to attack the disease, and multiplies an army of these new cancer fighters to be put back into the body.
Just one week after Maureen’s infusion of supercharged CAR T cells, her blood markers were all normal and she felt great.
"We’re trying to take the same thing that Maureen benefited from and bring it to everybody,” says Dr. Karlo Perica, part of an MSK team redefining how cancer is treated.
