STORYLINE:
Pro-Tibet activists in Rome and Paris took to the streets on Friday to protest against China and its rule over Tibet, as the Olympic Games were officially opened in Beijing.
In the French capital Paris, activists mostly from Reporters Without Borders, (RSF), protested near the Chinese embassy.
Carrying the RSF banner showing handcuffs in the form of the Olympic symbol, the march was tense with heightened security around the embassy, but there were no reports of violence.
A member of RSF managed to climb a building near the Chinese embassy and unfurled an RSF banner.
A group of pro-Tibet activists also burnt a small Chinese flag.
Meanwhile, a smaller group representing Tibetans in France demonstrated at the Trocadero opposite the famous Eiffel Tower.
