The Australian's Foreign Editor Greg Sheridan says the claim the Sheik Jarrah incident provoked Hamas to fire missiles upon central Israel is accepting Hamas propaganda.
“I don’t think the incident in Jerusalem was the provocation for these missiles – I think that’s just accepting Hamas propaganda,” he told Sky News.
Mr Sheridan told Sky News Australia, Hamas might be a “murderous terrorist” organization, but it is rational and its actions were deliberate.
Mr Sheridan also said Hamas’ actions played to Iran’s geo-strategic agenda.
“Hamas is a vicious, evil, murderous terrorist organization – but it’s not irrational – it knows that it will achieve no military victory over Israel.
“Hamas has made, under Iranian influence, a clear strategic decision to try to embarrass Israel by forcing it to respond.
“To re-establish itself as the most violently anti-Israel group within the Palestinian leadership movement and to follow timing which suits Iran’s geo-strategic agenda."
