A remastered version of Red Dead Redemption has been released for modern platforms including PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2, with the console version officially launching on December 2, 2025. Red Dead Redemption is a critically acclaimed, open-world, action-adventure game set during the decline of the American frontier in 1911, following the story of former outlaw John Marston.

The narrative centers on John Marston, who is forced by federal agents to hunt down the remaining members of his former gang, including Bill Williamson and Dutch van der Linde, in exchange for the safety and freedom of his family (his wife Abigail and son Jack).
His journey takes him across the American Southwest and Mexico, where he enlists the help of various characters, including a snake oil salesman, a drunkard, and a revolutionary leader. After successfully tracking down and eliminating his former associates, the agents, led by the corrupt Edgar Ross, renege on their deal. They launch a full-scale assault on John's ranch, and John sacrifices himself in a last stand so his family can escape. The game's epilogue jumps forward several years, allowing the player to control an adult Jack Marston, who eventually tracks down and kills Edgar Ross, avenging his father.

The game's development lasted over five years, and it became one of the most expensive video games ever made. Rockstar improved its proprietary game engine to increase its technological capabilities. The development team conducted extensive research, including field trips to Washington, D.C. and analyzing classic Western films, to achieve realism for the game. The team hired professional actors to perform the body movements through motion capture. Red Dead Redemption features an original score composed by Bill Elm and Woody Jackson. The game's development received controversy following accusations of unethical working practices. The studio's working hours and managerial style were met with public complaints from staff members.

Red Dead Redemption was released for the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 in May 2010, for the Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4 in August 2023, for Windows in October 2024, and for Android, iOS, Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in December 2025.
