The area around the pond is a bog formed 12,000 years ago 2. The pond was created in the seventeenth century to supply a mill with the same grain, hence its name, reminiscent of oat "groats 3. At the same time, peat was exploited there for heating until 1943, when the marsh drained 4. On February 5, 1980, the government of the canton of Jura placed the pond under state protection by transforming it into a nature reserve 5. In the 1980s, a regeneration plan was put in place to fill in the galleries used for peat extraction 3. In 1996, a management plan representing the result of a first consensus between the various actors and partners of more than 100 hectares of nature reserve spread over four municipalities - Saignelégier, Tramelan, Le Bémont, Montfaucon - was established with the aim of preserving this natural space which is also a recreation area visited by 100,000 to 150,000 people each year. They go for walks, picnics, swimming, ice skating in winter and fishing (pike, perch, carp, tench, introduced by man).
