This is the first time a EMD GP9 has made it past Quebec City, Quebec since December 2023. And as far as I know it’s the first time ever that a GTW GP9r made it to New Brunswick.
EMD GP9r brief history:
GTW (Grand Trunk Western) EMD GP9r #4623 was built originally in
March of 1957 as CV (Central Vermont) EMD GP9 #4549
(which in later years was renumbered to GTW EMD GP9 #4549)
and was later rebuilt by GTW somewhere between 1989 and 1993
as part of the GP9r rebuild program. The GP9r rebuild program was
done in Battle Creek MI and rebuilt selected GTW and CV GP9s and gave
the selected GP9s a new chop nose standard cab which were
purchased as kit cabs from IC (Illinois Central) and they were
assembled on the locomotives the selected GP9s would
also lose their traction motor blower duct. The units would also receive
solid state electrical systems, wheel slip control, and the replacement of their
EMD 567C prime mover with the more modern EMD 645 prime mover.
The locomotives would retain there original 1,750 horsepower. A total of 36 GP9s were
rebuilt into GP9r’s (4600-4635) with 2 of them (4634 and 4635) receiving
CN’s Newly Introduced Red White and Black scheme. Of the 36 rebuilt only a total of 9 are still
owned by CN and 5 are still in service. The other 27 were sold to various shortlines like
Wheeling & Lake Erie (WLE), Idaho & Northern Pacific Railroad (INPR), and others.
