I lost the trailer marker lights on my 3rd gen Dodge 1500 about three years ago. I'm assuming that the relay on the circuit board failed which is the most common cause of this issue. After a lot of thought I came up with a solution where I'm going to relocate the relay circuit to the rear of the vehicle using your typical 12 volt 30-40amp automotive relay.
The fix also had to:
be a simple repair
use the existing light switch on the dash
not require special tools
be able to have additional relays added easily
be fused with the same size fuse as used in the fuse box (#19 in my case)
Supplies
one 12v 30-40amp relay, mini fuse holder with 20a fuse, female spade connectors (4), 14ga wire (I used red white and brown), colored shrink tube, wire loom, electrical tape, zip ties and pool noodle.
Tools
Soldering gun with solder, knife, wire cutters, wire crimping pliers, test light
