Ever wondered why the sky is blue? 🌌 It’s not just a fact to memorize—it’s about building a mental model of how light works.
Your eyes are actually biological sensors for electromagnetic waves, and the different colors you see are just different wavelengths hitting your brain. While the sun blasts all colors at once (which we see as white light), our atmosphere acts like a filter.
The atmosphere is mostly made of nitrogen and oxygen, which are very lightweight particles. Because they are so small, they resonate with and scatter higher frequency light—specifically the blues and violets—more than the longer red wavelengths. This is why, when you look up at noon, the sky is filled with that scattered blue light.
But what about sunsets? 🌅 When the sun is low on the horizon, the light has to travel through much more atmosphere to reach you. By the time it gets to your eyes, the blue light has been scattered away completely, leaving only the red and orange "leftovers".
Try this at home: You can create a "sunset in a bottle" using a flashlight and a container of water with just a splash of milk!. The milk particles scatter the blue light just like the atmosphere, leaving a glowing orange "sunset" at the bottom.
